Great review of Packet Tracer. However, current version is now 5.3 with a lot of improvements,including BGP support. Have a look on http://www.packettracernetwork.com to view the list of added features and to get download instructions.
There are 3 different flavours of hp assistant. On August 26th, 2010, those are the available versions :

I don't know if there would be a way for software informer to diferentiate those versions, to avoid useless notifications.
